Scratching is a natural, normal, and necessary behavior in cats. Your cat does not scratch to upset you or to be spiteful in damaging your furniture. Scratching is a form of communication and often your cat will do it during times of stress and anxiety. It's important to provide your cat with suitable scratchers so they can exhibit what comes naturally.
Size, Shape & Texture: Most cats like to scratch vertically, so they need a post that is taller than their body length to fully stretch and give a good scratch. There are some cats though that prefer performing this exercise horizontally, so if your cat is scratching carpet, try using a scratcher that lays on the floor. The texture of the scratching post is as important as the size and shape. Many cats prefer sisal rope; others prefer corrugated cardboard or carpet on the scratching post.
It is important to experiment with a variety of types and textures to determine which your cat prefers.
Location is very important. Cats often stretch or scratch when they wake up, so place one near your cat's sleeping area. Important things to keep in mind:
Remember that your cat learns best through positive reinforcement. As you are redirecting your cat to use her new scratching post or pad, make sure you give him a reward immediately, to reinforce the positive behavior. The reward may be a treat like a cookie or catnip, or it could be interactive play, petting or grooming.
